The terms that come up most across Carbon Reduction Plans, embodied carbon and UK CBAM.
- Embedded emissions
- The greenhouse gas emissions released in producing a good, used under UK CBAM to calculate the charge on imports.
- Default value
- A conservative national or sector-average emissions figure used under CBAM when a supplier hasn't provided verified data.
- Scope 1, 2 & 3
- The GHG Protocol's classification: Scope 1 is direct emissions, Scope 2 is purchased energy, Scope 3 is everything else in the value chain.
- Embodied carbon
- Emissions from manufacturing, transporting and constructing a building's materials, as distinct from the energy it uses once occupied.
- Whole life carbon
- Embodied carbon plus operational carbon across a building's full life cycle, including end-of-life, per RICS methodology.
- PPN 06/21
- The UK government procurement notice requiring a Carbon Reduction Plan on qualifying public sector contracts.
- PAS 2080
- The British Standards Institution's specification for managing carbon in buildings and infrastructure.
- EPD
- Environmental Product Declaration, a verified, standardised report of a specific product's environmental impact.
- Commodity / CN code
- The customs classification code that determines whether an imported product falls under a CBAM sector.
- Emission shuffling
- Routing lower-carbon production toward a regulated market while higher-carbon production continues elsewhere, a risk of relying on default values.
- Baseline
- The starting-point emissions figure a Carbon Reduction Plan's targets are measured against.
- Verification
- Independent confirmation that reported emissions data is accurate, distinct from simply reporting a figure.
