What makes aluminium different under CBAM
Primary aluminium smelting is one of the most electricity-intensive processes in scope, so the source of that electricity, grid, on-site generation, or a renewable contract, tends to dominate the embedded emissions figure more than almost any other input. Secondary (recycled) aluminium carries a substantially different profile again.
A default value assigned to your country and sector average won't reflect either of those distinctions. If your smelting runs on a cleaner grid than your national average, or your product carries high recycled content, that only shows up in your buyer's charge if you supply the data yourself.
What we ask for
The specific data that actually moves your embedded emissions figure, rather than a generic questionnaire:
- Production volumes by alloy and product line, for the specific goods exported to the UK
- Electricity source and consumption per tonne, including grid mix or on-site generation
- Anode and other consumable-related process emissions
- Recycled content percentage
- Any carbon price already applied to production at origin
Prefer a document to send your own suppliers or production team? Download the full data checklist (PDF), it covers every CBAM sector on one sheet.
Common questions
Does recycled aluminium get a different default value to primary?
Default values are set at a national and sector average, so a blended figure may not distinguish primary from secondary production the way verified data would. That's exactly the kind of gap worth closing with your own numbers if your product is genuinely different from the average.
We already report under the EU's CBAM, is that enough?
It's a strong starting point, the underlying production and electricity data usually adapts quickly, but UK CBAM has its own product scope, default values and reporting periods, so it needs its own verification rather than a straight copy.
Verified at the source, not assumed at the border.
