UK CBAM Supplier Verification — Fertiliser

Fertiliser exporters and UK CBAM

Ammonia-based and nitrogen fertiliser products fall under UK CBAM from 1 January 2027. The production route behind your ammonia, not just the finished product, is what actually determines the number.

What makes fertiliser different under CBAM

Steam methane reforming, reforming with carbon capture, and electrolysis-based synthesis carry very different embedded emissions per tonne of ammonia, even when the finished fertiliser product looks identical on a spec sheet. Natural gas or electricity consumption per tonne, and any carbon capture applied, are the details that actually distinguish one producer from another.

A default value assigned at the country and sector level averages across all of that, which can either flatter or penalise a specific facility depending on which production route it actually uses. Verified data is the only way that distinction reaches your buyer's charge.

What we ask for

The specific data that actually moves your embedded emissions figure, rather than a generic questionnaire:

  • Production route: steam methane reforming, electrolysis (green), or another synthesis method
  • Natural gas or electricity consumption per tonne of product
  • Nitrogen content of the specific product exported
  • Any carbon capture applied to the ammonia synthesis process, and the capture rate
  • Any carbon price already applied to production at origin

Common questions

Does the fertiliser's nitrogen content matter?

Yes, it's one of the inputs used to convert production data into an embedded emissions figure per tonne of the specific product exported, rather than a blanket figure for "fertiliser" as a category.

We're a blender, not a producer, does this still apply to us?

It depends on where in the supply chain the ammonia synthesis actually happens. Worth confirming on a discovery call, since that's what determines whose production data is actually relevant.

Verified at the source, not assumed at the border.

A discovery call to confirm product lines, production routes, and who we're working with, supplier, importer, or both.
