Free carbon footprint calculator

Calculate your carbon footprint.

Runs on the UK Government's 2026 GHG Conversion Factors and the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, the same sources behind every assessment we deliver, built with contractors and site-based operations in mind.

Your organisation

Used to convert homeworking and commuting into annual totals.

SCOPE 1

Direct emissions

Office gas, factor 0.2027 kgCO2e/kWh, plus diesel burned directly in owned or hired plant, machinery and generators.

Shown on your gas bill, usually the most accurate figure you can give us.
Excavators, telehandlers, dumpers, mobile generators, anything running directly on red diesel or gas oil, owned or hired under your control.
SCOPE 2

Purchased electricity

Location based factor 0.131 kgCO2e/kWh, per the GHG Protocol. Office overhead and temporary site supply tracked separately for a clearer breakdown.

Shown on your electricity bill, usually the most accurate figure you can give us.
Reported location based, as the headline figure. Renewable % is shown as a separate market based comparison alongside your results. Spend based figures are lower accuracy than a metered kWh reading.
A temporary grid hook-up run to a site, not your permanent office supply. Diesel generator fuel is entered under Scope 1, above.
SCOPE 3

Value chain emissions

Commuting, business travel, hotels, purchased goods, waste, homeworking, and the upstream well-to-tank emissions of your gas and electricity.

Employee commuting

Staff using each mode, and average one way miles per day.
ModeStaffAnnual miles per person
Diesel car
Petrol car
Hybrid car
Electric car
Motorbike
Bus
Train
Taxi
Walk / cycle / lift share0
Electric car direct factor is 0 under UK Government data, the electricity is accounted for separately, not double counted here.

Business travel

Total annual mileage across the organisation, by mode.

Hotels

Spend based, factor 10.4 kgCO2e/room night.

Purchased goods & services

Spend based, Defra supply-chain multipliers by category, confirmed against the source publication.
Cement, steel, timber, bricks and similar bulk materials.
Engineering, architectural and site services.
Machinery and heavy asset hire or purchase.
Software, telecoms, paper and general admin.
Purchased goods should exclude energy bills, mileage claims, hotel costs, travel expenses, salaries and pension contributions.

Waste generated in operations

General waste sent to landfill versus recycled or composted.
Indicative UK average factors. Landfilled waste carries a far higher factor than recycled or composted waste, moving volume between the two is often the single cheapest reduction available.

Homeworking

Heating and equipment for staff working from home.

Calculated to the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. Every emission factor on this page has been checked directly against the UK Government's Greenhouse Gas Reporting: Conversion Factors 2026 (Department for Energy Security and Net Zero), electricity, gas, plant and machinery diesel, waste disposal, business travel, homeworking, and the well-to-tank figures for gas and electricity, generation and transmission losses combined. Purchased goods uses Defra's separate spend-based multiplier publication, split into four categories relevant to a contractor's cost base rather than one blanket figure, with multipliers confirmed against the source publication. Spend-based methods remain lower data quality than an activity based figure by the Protocol's own standard regardless of how well sourced the multiplier is, since spend is a proxy for consumption, not a direct measure of it, and that's flagged in your results accordingly. This calculator covers four of the five Scope 3 categories mandated in a PPN 06/21 Carbon Reduction Plan, business travel, commuting, waste, and fuel and energy related activities, alongside additional categories for a fuller picture. Upstream transportation and distribution, the fifth mandatory category, is not yet included.

Breakdown by scope

We have automatically included the mandated upstream supply chain impacts, well-to-tank and transmission and distribution losses, under your Scope 3 total. Most free calculators leave these out.
Confidence reflects data quality: activity or metered data is higher confidence than spend based estimates.
This is a self reported, activity based estimate using UK average factors for commuting, hotels and homeworking. A commissioned assessment replaces these averages with your actual data and includes the documented methodology and hotspot analysis a Carbon Reduction Plan or client report requires.
